Tata Motors is developing the Q501, a future SUV the Company will place above the Hexa lineup. The concept will be a premium crossover in 5-seater and 7-seater variants, the 7-seater being called the Q502.
The Q501 and Q502 concepts are not new and reports say that Tata Motors had earlier planned to unveil the concepts in 2017. However, that has been postponed to 2018 as of now.
Both the cars will share the structural pattern with Land Rover’s Discovery Sport model. Though the platform of the upcoming Tata twin SUVs will be similar to that of the Land Rover car, the premium cars will follow its own design language.
These premium crossovers will not use the JLR Ingenium fuel units as it will raise the overall cost of the price by a broad margin. The Company is planning on using Fiat’s 2.0 liter MultiJet II diesel unit that produces up to 170PS. The transmission and drivetrain options will be generous. The cars will come in both, manual and automatic options with a 6-speed gearbox. The drivetrain will also include Two Wheel Drive and Four Wheel Drive options.
Both the cars will come laden with all the safety features a premium SUV can be expected to have. There will be driving assist systems, and ample airbags settings, and more. The cars will come with the latest infotainment, connectivity, and navigation systems. The Q501 and Q502 concepts will battle the Mahindra XUV500 and the Toyota Fortuner.
The Q501 premium compact SUV will take on the Renault Duster, the Ford EcoSport, and the Hyundai Creta as well. All these rivals being successful models in the segment, the car codenamed Q501 will have to come with the best offer including in the performance, styling, comfort, and features department.
The Q501 is expected to be a smooth off-roader, or that’s what the Company is trying to make of it. The exterior or interior designs have not been decided on yet. There are no pictures or whatever of a detailed prototype. However, the car will bear some similarity with the newest Bolt and Zest models.
The side profile can be expected to be muscular. The exteriors are expected to flaunt projector headlamps with LED DRLS and LED tail lamps. The size and wheelbase will be around the same dimensions as of its key rivals. The interiors are expected to sport premium fabric for the upholstery, a Harman Kardon infotainment system, and ConnectNext connectivity.
The Q501 will use the 1.5 liter engine from Fiat, and 1.6 liter engine that offers up to 117BHP in the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross. The 5-seater is likely to be priced around the INR 12 lac mark. The base trim is likely to be around INR 10 lac, while the top trim may go up to about INR 14 lac. The car will be placed below the Storme.
The Q502 on the other hand will come powerpacked with more features and it will be based on the Raptor platform with reinforcements from Land Rover. It will get the 1.5 liter and 2.0 liter engine options.
