Mercedes Benz has recently confirmed about the development of an A-class based SUV to compete with Audi Q3 and BMW X1. The GLG along with the GLA will mark the entry of Mercedes Benz in the premium luxury compact crossover segment. Daimler Chief Executive of the company said that “This start of production marks a further milestone in our Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy. The A-Class represents our offensive in the compact segment.” He added that there is more to come and this compact SUV will be the third model to be built in Rastatt. It is expected that the new GLG should debut in 2015 and the price range will be around 25lakhs.
The design of GLG will based on the design language of the G Wagon and should not confuse the GLG with the GLA Compact SUV being the developed to take on the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. GLG is a toned down version of A-class which is based on MFA platform. The GLG will be well positioned among the vehicles of the same category and the new model is designed mainly aimed at the youth. Hence the design is more dynamic to look at and to drive. The compact SUV will have a more upright posture. The current Mercedes range is devoid of an SUV and the gap will be filled by GLG.
The upcoming A-class SUV is expected to be named GLA and unlike the G, the GLG won’t be a hardcore off roader. Power options for the GLG will be available in both petrol and diesel motors and will be capable of delivering between 120PS to 250PS. Mercedes is also considering a hybrid with two compact electric motors on the rear axle.
The new model is expected to share the A-class MFA platform. This means that GLG will be a front wheel drive with optional automatic gears. There will be an off-road package, which will have a wide track, an extended wheelbase with front wheel drive. The design of this SUV is in such a way that it imparts a serious off -road look to the vehicle. The off-road package will come with hill descent control, dedicated 4×4-driving program, skid plates and a compass for easy navigation. Like other Mercedes there is wide use of chrome in the exterior and the bulging arch wheels give the vehicle a sturdy look. This vehicle will have exceptional road presence and you can expect the engineering perfection that you always experience in the cars from this company. The Mercedes GLG would be a great rival for the Land Rover Defender which will be manufactured in India. The feature of the car is more perfect for off road performance.
