Sources have revealed that Hyundai Motor India Ltd, the Indian wing of the Korean carmaker is planning to launch a 1.0-liter engine model of the Hyundai Eon. This version, which is more powerful, is likely to have revised exteriors which would include a new bumper, front grille, headlights and some alterations to the rear. The Eon 1.0 is looking at a 2014 debut and will compete directly against the Maruti Alto K10, Chevrolet Spark and the A-Star from the Maruti stable.
The engine for the Eon 1.0 may be the 998cc, three-cylinder, petrol engine that powers the European entry level i10. It is of note here that the base models of Hyundai’s i10 in India get power from the fast becoming obsolete 1.1 litre engine that previously powered the Santro. The 1.0 litre engine comes with a max power of 68bhp @6,200rpm as well as a peak torque of 95Nm @3,500rpm. This would effectively allow a 0-100kmph run of 14 seconds or less for the Eon which is good enough to compete with some larger hatchbacks as well as a top speed of 155kmph.
The Eon 1.0 is to be sold along with the existing 800cc models and would be dearer than by about INR 40000 as against the latter. It should also help Hyundai achieve more appeal and better sales at least for the Eon.
